His mother Cho is half Kiffar, and half Hyuuga -- her mother the Hyuuga, and her father the Kiffar. *Kiffar are a smaller race of Dragons living in the Underground.* Before his birth, the great snake lord tried, and was able to possess the unborn boy. (He made a deal with Madara -- if Madara used his power, he would get to posses the boy.)
After his birth, he was given a curse mark boy orochimaru-- orochimaru tired and failed
